Former Colorado Springs cop convicted on 21 child porn charges

Many observers expressed surprise at the results of the jury trial of a former Colorado Springs police officer and wrestling coach who was charged with a variety of sex-related crimes. The jury failed to convict him on the majority of the counts. The 31-year-old man faced charges of child exploitation, child sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

Jury members were not able to reach a consensus on the majority of the charges. The man was convicted on 21 counts of child pornography, but was acquitted on 36 molestation charges. An additional 150 charges resulted in deadlock, with no verdict issued on those counts.

Although some were shocked by the verdict, jurors said two of their members held out against the child sexual abuse charges. The District Attorney said he will retry the man on all 150 charges that remain outstanding, and he plans to employ the help of the children who were allegedly molested. The parents of the children in the case say they are willing to allow the children to take the stand at trial.

The man’s Colorado Springs defense attorneys contend that he was simply performing his duties as a coach by checking for dangerous skin diseases such as ringworm.

The defendant worked as a resource officer at the school before the allegations of sexual assault surfaced. He had worked for the Colorado Springs Police Department for a period of seven years before he resigned because of the sexual abuse allegations.
